TheARtro

TheARtro is based on the development of new technologies in combination with traditional theatrepractices, and aims to increase audience accessibility and boost the synergy between performing arts and tourism, as well as the evolution of the entire process of creating and watching theater. TheARtro relies on the use of specific augmented reality tools for the projection of elements within the

audience’s field of view, which can expand their perception, without taking away from the actual experience or distracting the spectators from their real environment. The spatial registration, detection and tracking which provide the ability to interject pieces of augmented information in real space are based on the application of depth-sensing technology with specialized cameras, in combination with tracking and monitoring systems via wireless localization devices (i.e. iBeacon), which allow the spatial inlay of information in real time. TheARtro will be developed into three basic applications: Live surtitling for foreign audiences, b) Developing tourism oriented performances, c) Using augmented reality throughout the creating process.

TheARtro potentially aims to develop: 1) Theatre tourism by adding value to the Greek tourist product, 2) Groundbreaking methods of artistic creation, adapting contemporary practices, 3) Exportable theatre products, strengthening the position of Greek production companies in the global theatre market, 4) The use of innovative (and commercially prosperous) techniques for the dissemination of our cultural heritage, 5) The decentralization of theatre production, using the system to create performances in regions that attract tourists throughout the country
