Traditional, non-mediated human communication involved partners from the same social group and presupposed physical proximity. But today’s technology-mediated communication takes place at a distance, between partners from different cultural backgrounds. This increases the risk of misunderstanding and conflict. Current technologies are ineffective in conveying the non-verbal signals and contextual information required for effective communication. In the long run PASION envisages the creation of “quiet”, lightweight, low cost, easy-to-use consumer devices, using mixed and augmented-reality technologies, support enhanced non-verbal and implicit communication and improved transmission of contextual data.
