The goal of iMedius is to introduce and put under test innovative multidisciplinary procedures that will bring together social sciences research instruments and multimodal analysis tools from the digital world. iMedius’ goal is twofold. First, it aims at developing monitoring processes to identify the impact of (breaking) news items, with their unique characteristics, concerning content types, social media channels and audiences. These methods will allow searching for likely patterns that news spread follows, both in terms of time (referring to the temporal succession of the streams) and structure (coupled with the cross-/trans-media appearance patterns). Second, it aims at investigating the multiperspective effects of news (and media) impact on emotional and behavioral levels, applying social methods (i.e., cognitive surveys and laboratory experiments) combined with technological tools (e.g., user attention monitoring, emotion extraction, eye tracking).

CERTH is actively involved in the technical aspects of the iMedius project. Its contributions include defining user requirements and designing prototype interfaces and data flows for the proposed tools and services. Additionally, CERTH will develop software tools and services focused on media impact assessment. Finally, it will contribute to the integration of tools and social instruments into multimodal evaluation procedures.
