As the global financial market is constantly changing, there is an urgent need for real-time discovery and presentation of trends, opportunities and risks for investors, and especially for small, non-professional investors, in order to be able to react quickly and to appropriately adjust their investment decisions. Traditional financial consultant or investment advisor services currently available in the market are particularly expensive and therefore inaccessible to small, non-professional investors.

In order to meet this gap in the market, the proposal ASPENDIS proposes the creation of an innovative technology that can achieve the democratization of the access of simple investors to the valuable information that is necessary for making better investment decisions. The innovative solution of ASPENDIS is based on the exploitation of data mining technologies and the advanced processing of big data (data from multiple sources such as financial reports and news broadcasts, investment firm analyses, market data (historical and real time), data available on social networking tools with emphasis on Twitter, investor blogs, articles of the financial press) and advanced machine learning algorithms for the automated creation of investment signals from this data. A trigger for the development of this innovation has been the publication of recent studies showing that taking into account features of economic news, financial analyses and corporate news as well as information streams from social media (Facebook, Twitter) can improve the forecasting predictability of stock market moves and lead to gains of 5-10%, which, if one considers the quantities of money traded on a daily basis in this market, is a very significant amount. The processing of large amounts of information (big data) from multiple sources through real-time data analysis methods powered by ASPENDIS is now feasible for the simple investor, along with automatic reliability and reliability assessment of sources that can protect the investor from false news coming from malicious market participants. At the same time, the capabilities of ASPENDIS’s technology to aggregate the historical data of the collected information greatly enhance the possibility of long-term estimates and forecasts in the financial sector. In total, ASPENDIS technology allows the non-professional investor to receive

automatically generated investment signals, revealing news, trends, opportunities and risks in a much shorter period of time,

an assessment of the reliability of the relevant sources, thus giving the investor the valuable capability of rapid and timely response to the market, which is considered a catalyst for success in investing.

The consortium of the ASPENDIS project consists of the publishing company Media2Day and the research organization CERTH. Both organizations have extensive experience in designing and performing complex research and development projects, as well as in the commercial exploitation of technological innovations. CERTH has a major research activity in the project-related areas of big data analytics and visualization, written text sentiment analysis, machine learning and artificial intelligence. The pilot application of ASPENDIS will be adapted to the top portal of financial information in Greece, Euro2day.gr, that belongs to Media2Day. In a second phase, Media2Day will take advantage of the technology through the promotion of the pilot application to investors abroad (initially through the company’s existing cooperation with the Financial Times), demonstrating the so much needed extroversion which is nowadays mandatory for all Greek companies.
